The Battle of Maldon constitutes, together with the Battle of Brunanburh and the Battle of Finnsburh, the trio about battles in which the warriors, the fight and the glory in battle are sung, representing the warrior heroism typical of the Germanic peoples.
The Battle of Maldon described in a poem of 325 verses, celebrates the confrontation in which the eorl Býrhtnod of Essex and his men fell against Danish Vikings in the year 991. It must have been written shortly after the battle. It is considered one of the best in existence, but both the beginning and the end are missing and the only manuscript in which it was preserved was destroyed by fire in 1731.
