Avalon is the island where the legendary sword Excalibur was forged and where King Arthur recovered from his wounds at the Battle of Camlann.
The oldest version where this inscription appears is that of Giraldo in “Liber de Principis instructione” in the year 1193, and he says that he saw the cross, and read what it said: “Here lies buried the famous King Arthur with Guinevere his second wife on the island of Avalon.” Giraldo claims that inside the coffin there were enormous bones and that they are the bones of King Arthur.
The mythical island of Avalon was called the “Island of Golden Apples and Eternal Life,” Merlin's last home, fairy land, and the resting place of King Arthur.
