The Hedge Knight is the first of the Dunk and Egg Tales and serves as a prequel to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. A wandering knight, Ser Arlan of the Coin Tree, dies during the night. His squire, a tall young man named Dunk, buries him and pays his final respects. After considering several options, Dunk decides to continue his journey to Ashford and compete in the tournament as a knight.
