The Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, better known as the Order of Malta, is a Catholic religious order founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century by Amalfi merchants. It was born within the framework of the crusades and from the beginning, along with its hospital activity, it carried out military actions against the Muslim armies (initially Arab, and later also Turkish). It is currently recognized internationally by nations as a subject of international law. Its headquarters are currently located in the city of Rome, Italy, on Via dei Condotti, near the Spanish Steps. That building and the Aventine Palace, which functions as its embassy to the Holy See and Italy, have extraterritoriality status.
At first, its members were called Knights Hospitallers (or Hospitallers), the same as Knights of Saint John, The Religion and Giovannitio Gerosolimitani, referring respectively to their patron saint, their character as a religious brotherhood and Jerusalem, where the Order was founded. After the conquest of the island of Rhodes, its members became known as the Knights of Rhodes and, after the transfer of the Maltese archipelago, the Knights of Malta.
This magnificent medieval sword from Malta has a steel pommel with a highly relief cross, from the Brotherhood, which symbolizes its devotion. The blade is forged from high carbon steel very well balanced. The handle is made of wood and covered with hand-stitched genuine leather. The sheath is leather with metal hardware.
