The corps was founded in 1622 by Louis XIII and has its origins in a regiment of his father, Henry IV, who used carbines. Louis XIII equipped the company with muskets, which gave it the popular name of musketeers. The new guard was made up of 100 musketeers and three officers, divided into infantry and cavalry formations.

The Musketeers reappeared in 1657 as a company of 150 men. When Mazarin died in 1661, the cardinal's musketeers then passed to Louis XIV.

The two companies were reorganized in 1664, one taking the name "Gray Musketeers" and the other "Black Musketeers", after the color of their uniforms. At the same time, the number of members in each company doubled.

The Musketeers were among the most prestigious military companies of the Ancien Regime and in principle the companies were reserved for members of the nobility.

In 1776, during the reign of Louis XVI, the company was dissolved for economic reasons. Reformed in 1789, it was eliminated again shortly after. The Restoration refounded the Musketeers on July 4, 1814, and then definitively dissolved them on January 1, 1816.

His name was later popularized by the novels of Alexandre Dumas.
