Raymond or Raymond III of Tripoli was Duke of Tripoli from 1152 and differed from many Christians in his attitude towards Muslims. In contrast to the Knights of St. John and the Knights Templar, his style of government was moderate. Through his marriage to Eschiva Von Bures he acquired large parts of the northern Kingdom of Jersulam, as well as the fortress at Tiberias. Therefore, it is no coincidence that in the film "Kingdom of Heaven", Tiberias exhibited an obvious resemblance to Raymond III.
In Tripoli Raymond III made peace with Saladin. But after he attacked an embassy sent by Guido to Raimundo, Raimundo made peace with Guido, and they combined their troops against Saladin. With Raymond's opposition, Guido decided to fight Saladin directly and they were defeated at the Battle of the Horns of Hattin (1187). Raimundo was one of the few who managed to escape. He died that same year in Tyre.
