This is the name given to swords or sabers whose handles are long enough to be carried with both hands. The two-handed sword was a specialized and effective infantry weapon for fighting pikes, halberds, and spears. It was used by Swiss and German soldiers in the 15th century as well as by Italians in the 16th century. Some two-handed swords had a flagellated blade design.
Some types of swords of this style are; the claymore, the katana, the doppelhänder or zweihänder, the Chinese sword zhanmadao, the greatsword, the greatsword and the stanchion.
- Claymore.- Scottish sword whose use required both hands to be brandished. It was sharpened on both sides of the blade and had a very long handle, at least a quarter of the total length of the weapon.
