The longsword is a European sword with a long, double-edged blade, narrower and with a wider cross than the medieval sword and with a two-handed grip, which was widely used between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Its length and way of wielding it is the most important characteristic.
They are the natural development from the medieval European swords derived from the Nordic swords, which were brandished with one hand, wider especially in their first third and with a shorter cross.
The classic sword of the knight of the early Middle Ages begins to become stylized and longer, becoming more pointed in order to achieve greater effectiveness and versatility.
The long sword used to measure between 90 cm and 120 cm of blade and when adding its long handles, they reached a measurement of 110 cm to 140 cm. Its weight could reach a kilo and a half.
Its double-edged blade evolved from being sharp to being stabbing, when complete armor of steel plates appeared.
Oriental swords, such as Japanese and Chinese, are usually characterized by having long blades, although they are not European.
Many of the swords of the most famous warriors were robust and long combat swords.
