The German town of Xanten is located in the west of the country, very close to the border with Holland. Around the year 13 B.C. The Roman legions, led by Drusus, the nephew of Emperor Augustus, installed a bridgehead on the right bank of the Rhine near the current Xanten as a base to develop the conquest of new territories to the East.
The Castra Vetera camp and a river port are built, the base of the Roman Rhine fleet, the Classis germanica. In 1977 an Archaeological Park was created on the ancient Roman sites and the constructions of the imperial era have been recreated.
Some loose pieces of the gladius called Xanten have been found in Xanten, which has been identified as a Pompeian gladius. The most characteristic thing is its original sheath.
