Shashka is a weapon of war, a light sharp weapon type; However, it is not exactly classified as a type of saber. Its blade is long, slightly curved and single-edged, but it has a double edge at the tip. Known as the Cossack cavalry saber (Shashka) in Russia in 1881.
A good combatant armed with a light shashka must rely mainly on his speed, skill and mastery of fencing techniques and not on the striking force, common in the use of a heavy bladed weapon.

At the beginning of the First World War, Cossack shashkas of the 1881 model became widespread in all cavalry units of the Russian Army.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the same model of shashka was decreed as a regulatory weapon of the Soviet Army, excluding Cossack and Caucasian regiments and units, where the national and traditional model of a shorter and lighter shashka was maintained. For senior command officers, a special design of the “shashka dragons” model was developed.
In 1927 the Soviet Army finally widely adapted the traditional model of shashka, similar or little different to the model of 1881. In 1940, etiquette shashka was regulated for generals of all Arms of the Army (later, in 1949 this was replaced by a dagger). Since 1968, the shashka has been maintained as a weapon of honor as well as a special military distinction, in addition to being a regulatory weapon for stoppage and etiquette.
